Christmas Means Saying ‘Yes!’ to God

“Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires.”  Matthew 5:10

Jesus was born of Mary over two-thousand years ago, but Christmas is not a one-time event.  Since that first Christmas God has been giving God’s self away all this time in a thousand different ways for our sake and for the sake of creation.  And God will not stop; there will be Christmas after Christmas . . . Christ born again and again among us.  (The Upper Room, Disciples 2011)  Each time we yield ourselves to God, we are renewed again and again in Christ’s image. 

I’ve heard time and time again, individuals say: “I’m just not sure what God wants me to do,” or “I’m trying to make a decision, but there seems to be so many options.”  I appreciate what Bishop Walpole shared with a friend who was pondering a call in his life.  He suggested: “If you are uncertain of which of two paths to take, choose the one on which the shadow of the cross falls.”   Each day we are faced with choices and each day provides us with an opportunity to serve God or serve ourselves.  Oftentimes the decision is as simple as doing something for someone else or watching TV or indulging in idle activities.  Not that “down-time” is unnecessary or much-needed, at times.  Who we are becoming in Christ has everything to do with our choices.  Each day we have the opportunity and choice to say “yes” to God.

Christmas is a wonderful time to ponder anew how each one us can wholeheartedly allow God to use us to bring the Good News to others.  And each time we respond affirmatively to God, we are renewed again in Christ’s image!
